Staff at Jumping Jacks are jumping for joy after their store window was a festive first in the Best Dressed Christmas Window Competition.

Dozens of shops and stores in Ashton Old Town were visited by a judging panel led by Cllr Lynn Travis, Chair of Ashton District Assembly, who organised the competition. She was joined by Lyn Williams, Ladysmith Shopping Centre and Alf Hallworth of Harrington and Hallworth Jewellers.

The panel were delighted that so many businesses in the Old Town had made a real effort to make their shops stand out.

Jumping Jacks children’s wear in George Street was chosen as the winner, Shubar shoe store on Old Street was second.

Cllr Travis said: “We liked the way that the Jumping Jacks window incorporated some of the store’s stock into the Christmas display.

“There were lots of colours and sparkling designs that were part of the window decoration which made it look very festive and Christmassy.

“We liked the big snowman and the snow designs for the children at Shubar too.”

The Christmas Cracker Award went to the Toddlin nursery goods store on Old Street.
Cllr Travis said: “We really liked the fireplace complete with Christmas stockings.”

There was a further category - Rudolph Recommended - for shops and stores whose festive window displays deserved recognition for their efforts.

Rudolph’s recommendation went to Cordwell’s in Old Street; Potters Wheel, Stamford Street; Tricia’s in George Street; L M Motorcycles in Old Square and Connexions in Clarence Arcade.

All the winners will receive their trophies at the Ashton District Assembly meeting on 21 January.

INDIAN OCEAN RAISES ALMOST £1000 FOR OXFAM APPEAL

The Indian Ocean Restaurant & Lounge raised almost £1000 on behalf of Oxfam during National Curry Week at the end of November.
The highlight of the week was the Oxfam Charity Dinner, a five-course dinner in the company of guests of honour, the Worshipful Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Tameside. Diners dug deep into their pockets to support a charity raffle and the Indian Ocean contributed £1 for every restaurant meal ordered during the week.

Nahim Aslam, owner of the Indian Ocean, confirmed:
"We know that our customers are finding things tougher this year, particularly with Christmas approaching. Nevertheless, we are delighted that their generosity has allowed us to contribute this fantastic sum to such a worthy cause."

The Indian Ocean restaurant in Ashton-under-Lyne has been named the best curry restaurant in the North West for the second successive year.

The Indian Ocean in Stamford Street East was one of ten spice restaurants throughout the UK honored last night (19 Oct) at the 2008 British Curry Awards, sponsored by Barclays Commercial and Barclaycard Business.  The biggest event in the curry calendar, held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel, was attended by more than 1,100 restaurateurs, MPs, diplomats and celebrity guests.

The Indian Ocean had been one of six restaurants in the North West to make it to the list of 100 establishments across the UK from which the ten winners were selected.  This year’s British Curry Awards winners were chosen from a record number of more than 26,000 public nominations covering 3,000-plus restaurants

The glitz and the glamour of the awards ceremony, hosted by impressionist and comedian Jon Culshaw, did full justice to an industry that pours £3.2 billion a year into the UK economy.

Nahim Aslam, owner of the Indian Ocean, confirms: “The Indian Ocean blends a passion for great food, brilliant service and a fun, welcoming atmosphere.  We are extremely proud to be in Tameside and to be serving the finest curry in the North West.  National recognition and accolades are mighty fine, but it is local recognition that warms the heart and nurtures the spirit of our wholly-deserving Indian Ocean team.”

On Saturday 19th April a small parade led by Adamson's Military Band will march through Ashton Town Centre at 11.50am, arriving at Ashton Town Hall at approximately 12 noon. The Civic Mayor of Tameside will then address the crowds from the Town Hall steps and officially open the St. George's Day event.

Celebrations will then take place in the Civic Square where Edward Montagu's Regiment of Foote will perform English Civil War Drill Displays and members of the Regiment will demonstrate a wide range of skills with sewing, weaving and spinning from their living history tents.

Medieval music will be played throughout the afternoon along with brass band music from Adamson's Military Band and dance performances from the Milltown Cloggies. They will also be running a painting/colouring competition for children with prize money available.

Stilt walkers and knights and squires, accompanied by representatives of The Royal British Legion will be handing out free St. George's Day silk roses to everyone.

Costumed knights and squires, accompanied by representatives of The Royal British Legion will also be visiting every other town in Tameside handing out roses.

Project Office Closure
Due to the end of current regeneration funding provided by the Government, The Ashton Regeneration Project office on Old Street, will close to the public from Friday 14th March. However, residents will still be able to contact staff using the normal 0161 343 7200 telephone number.

The Government has announced a successor funding scheme to the current Neighbourhood Renewal Fund that ends in March called The Working Neighbourhoods Fund and Tameside has been awarded £12.5million over a three-year period.

This fund will support employment projects across the borough and is likely to include the former Ashton Regeneration Project area within its focus.

The Regeneration Partnership will remain and continue to work in the best interests of residents in the area. Watch this space for news in the future about how the Partnership will take forward its work over the next three years.
Village Ashton Moss Hotel continues apace with new management already appointed
Village Hotel and Leisure Club Ashton Moss Hotel is scheduled to open its doors in Spring 2008, creating 150 jobs and it is delighted to announce the appointment of its senior team, General Manager Mark Williams; Head of Health & Fitness, Roger Finney; and Sales Manager Paula Pilling, with over 25 years industry experience between this team.
These three appointments come at an important time in the development of the new hotel scheduled to open its doors officially on 21st April 2008. Following the successful launch of Village Hotel and Leisure Club Swansea in 2007, the group is making a £90 million investment in 2008 which spans across an extensive refurbishment across the full portfolio of 17 hotels as well as 3 properties in the schedule for 2008 alone. Over the next five years, the Village Hotel and Leisure Club Group plans to increase the portfolio to 50 hotels across the UK

Long standing employee with Village since 2001, Mark Williams, general manager for the Ashton Moss property, will be leading this flagship hotel in the North West, set to drive both the leisure and business market from the area and across the UK. Mark Williams began working with the Village Hotel and Leisure Club Group in Warrington in 2001 and moved to become General Manager of the Village Hotel & Leisure Club Walsall in March 2005 three months after it opened. Mark has extensive hotel and catering industry experience - with 10 years experience with Thistle Hotels - starting at the Atlantic Tower in Liverpool as assistant food and beverage manager and rose within the group to open the Thistle Middlesbrough in early 2000.

Paula Pilling has already worked within the De Vere group for four years in various support roles from field sales to national accounts and now will take the role of Sales Manager for Village Hotel Ashton Moss, striving to deliver the best opportunities for both the local community as well as national market whether it be for weddings, conference & smaller scale business meetings - all the way through to weekend breaks or local visitors within the food and beverage facilities on property. Prior to joining the ranks at De Vere, Paula worked for Shearing Holidays, Holiday Inn and served over ten years service within the retail sector working within the Burton Group as a store manager for the well known high street stores Dorothy Perkins and TopShop.

Award winning Health & Fitness manager Roger Finney joins the Village Hotel Ashton Moss after working at Esporta. With over 12 years industry experience within the health and fitness sector, Roger will become an asset not only to Ashton Moss but the Village hotel fitness group, set to show the local community the benefits of exercise at your own pace through the relaxed but broad health and leisure offer available within the hotel's club onsite.

Gary Davis, chief operating officer Village Hotels, said of the appointments, "We've got a really strong team ready for the Ashton Moss property plus lots of other opportunities for recruitment within the local area. We hope to see many of the local community frequenting the property whether it be for a Friday night drink in The Victory Pub, enjoying a lazy Sunday lunch at Verve Grill, or dropping in for a swim, right through to signing a key business deal under our new roof. I'm confident both local visitors as well as leisure break visitors will be impressed with the new hotel at Ashton Moss as it will be one of our flagship hotels in the UK, leading the way for the new Village concept in the premium budget sector."
