Around 150 sketches, drawings and paintings will be up for grabs when Tameside artist John Kimpton organises an art auction in support of the ‘Ashton Market Hall Phoenix Fund’! However he is still seeking an auctioneer for the evening!

John, who has already had a book published containing his sketches of people going about their daily lives on and around Ashton-under-Lyne marketground, entitled ‘Art Of The Community, was stunned by the terrible fire that gutted Ashton’s listed Victorian indoor market hall back in May.

He said: “I was really upset by the fire that destroyed the Market Hall. I shopped there regularly and enjoyed the bustle of life in and around the market. Ironically, I actually had a couple of original pictures in the Market Manager’s office, which were destroyed in the fire!

“Tameside Council are providing the wonderful Civic Hall in Ashton Town Hall for the auction and prospective bidders will be able to view items from 12 noon on Wednesday 25th of August. We are still on the look out for a celebrity or experienced auctioneer to take up the gavel on our behalf and I would invite anyone able and prepared to do so, to contact me.

“This auction is aimed at raising money for the Ashton Market Hall Phoenix Fund and supporting the market traders that lost everything in the fire. It will help them to restock so that they can resume trading in the temporary Phoenix Hall which is due to open in September and so I am hoping for a brilliant response to the auction”

Each of the works of art have been donated by artists from across the region and the response has been strong although John is still appealing for more. “The response from my peers has been superb. One elderly lady travelled all the way from Manchester by bus to personally hand over four paintings as she herself used to shop in the Market Hall and so shared our loss. However… the more lots we have, the more money we can hopefully raise!

“The auction starts at 6pm and I am hoping that as well as private individuals, local businesses will send representatives to attend and bid on their behalves. Everybody is welcome including the man in the street and as I have seen all the pictures donated so far, I can assure potential bidders that the standard is amazingly good!

“It would be great to have pictures by local artists actually displayed locally, although private collectors are of course, more than welcome. If anyone is unable to attend on the evening, we will accept sealed bids delivered throughout the day and as well as being seriously intentioned, the evening should also be a lot of fun.

Regrettably due to the effects of the Market Hall fire, it has been necessary to cancel the planned visit of the 96.2 Revolution Radio Roadshow for Saturday 14th August, which will be now rescheduled for sometime later in the year.
However, Ashton will come to life on Saturday 21st August as the annual ‘Spirit of the Streets’ Festival comes to town. The event, organised by Tameside Council’s Arts & Events Team, is now in its fourth year and never fails to entertain.

From 11.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. the streets will be bursting with a bonanza of colour, sound and theatrical treats as artists mingle with visitors and shoppers to make a day spent in Ashton, a memorable occasion!

Due to the recent fire at Ashton Market Hall, unfortunately there will be no live music stage in front of the Town Hall – but do not fear! This year there will be an array of additional strolling artists performing around the town.

For all you music lovers out there, enjoy the ‘Veya Sax Quartet’, stilt walkin’ jazz, rock and percussion, and a touch of class with ‘Abatutta’ and his soaring sound of the trumpet, plus the traditional sounds of brass from Tame Valley Brass Band who will be performing on Fletcher Street.

Strolling entertainers will include four mountain gorillas and their intrepid explorer, Indiana Smith; ‘High Rise Rubber’ – the awesome earth-crawling creatures; ‘Bedlam Oz’ – all the way from Australia with the lovable ‘slinkies’; ‘Circo Rum Ba Ba’ with their flying fox bats; ‘Artemis’ with their praying mantas, insectoid mutes; colourful ‘Chinese Acrobats’; the exceptionally beautiful ‘Divine Ribbon Dance’ and the ‘B-Boys’ breakdancing sensation.

So, with face painting for the kids and much more, Ashton town centre will be the place to be. Miss it … miss out!

A large wooden boat has sunk in the ocean, carrying precious cargo. The cargo and its treasures have been thrown across the sea bed. Amongst them live all kinds of fish, slimy jelly fish and craggy star fish. A bed of brightly coloured coral provides shelter for a sea turtle, it escapes the predatory stare of a shark. A diver has reached the wreck and is investigating its story. Words fill the sea, as the sound of many poets echo through the waves.

Tameside Museums and Galleries Service and Tameside Libraries Service have worked with Year 8 students from 5 Tameside secondary schools, visual artist, Sophie Zadeh and performance poets, Mike Garry and Marvin Cheesman. Over four weeks students from Audenshaw School, Hartshead School, Littlemoss School, Longdendale School, Stamford School and Gifted and Talented students from across the borough have worked to transform the space using a variety of materials and techniques. The students have created poems on an underwater theme which appear on video monitors embedded within the installation.

The completed installation is a magical transformation of the gallery space and is an environment to visit, relax, read and spend time in. A truly collaborative project with over 100 students working on it, this installation engage and inspires and challenges the gallery space.

Free Parent and Toddler Play sessions :
Wednesday Afternoons: 30 June, 7 July, 14 July, 21 July: 1.30 – 2.30 pm

The installation is a magical environment in which to spend time with your toddler. We will be holding some creative play sessions in the completed installation with story telling, games and a different making activity each week.
No need to book, just turn up.

Gifted and Talented Students
30 Gifted and Talented Students from schools across the borough will be returning in the summer holidays to work with a photographer and graphic designer to create a publication that records the installation after it has finished.

This project is funded by DfES National Summer Schools for Gifted and Talented students allocated by Tameside Lifelong Learning Services.
The Submerged project is part funded by the Lottery through Arts Council of England

Follow in the footsteps of royalty

IT is normally reserved for the likes of royalty, VIPs and other special invited guests.

But on Saturday June 19 at 10.30am the mayor’s parlour inside the historic Ashton Town Hall, Tameside, is to open its doors for the very first time to all members of public.

It will be a unique opportunity to view the prestigious room – which over the years has played host to the likes of the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, foreign presidents and other dignitaries – and gain a behind-the-scenes insight into the role of the civic mayor.

The mayor’s attendant will also be on hand to show visitors the treasure trove of gifts, memorabilia and art work on display in the parlour. These include: the original royal warrant granting Tameside the freedom to act as a metropolitan borough; a collection of bronze statues including one which has a “lucky” gold foot fabled to bring good fortune to all who touch it and; the famous painting ‘Northern Saturday’ by the celebrated local artist Harry Rutherfield.

Afterwards visitors will be invited to join the current civic mayor, Cllr Margaret Downs, for a cup of tea in the Etherow Lounge.

The free event is ticket only – to reserve a place contact the mayor’s secretary
Joanne Green on 0161 342 3087 before Friday June 11.

Opportunity calls for Ashton Moss

A MULTI-million-pound call centre and warehouse is to open at Ashton Moss. AMEC and Stayley, the developers at the Ashton Moss site, have signed up office products supplier, Office Depot.

The company will relocate from Chadderton to the site on the outskirts of Ashton town centre.

Work on a new 26,662- sq m regional distribution hub and call centre has begun and Office Depot expects to be operational by April 2005.

In addition to the distribution centre, the deal will incorporate a 3,484-sq m call centre and an extra 4,645 sq m for expansion.

The project, which has received £4.1m funding from the North West Development Agency, will employ some 500 staff on opening, most of them coming with the company from Chadderton.

Darran Lawless, senior development surveyor at AMEC, said of the deal: "We have been working on Ashton Moss for seven years and the deal recently concluded with Office Depot is a clear indication of the dedication and hard work of the whole professional team involved in delivering a regeneration project of which the region can be proud.

"It's fantastic news, not only for Ashton Moss, but also for the local community and economy."

Compelling

Office Depot's Chris Mahoney said: "We are pleased with the opportunities the new site presents.

"In terms of both location and facilities, it certainly meets our requirements and will allow us the opportunity to continue to provide our customers with exceptional service in this region and offer our employees a compelling place to work."

The Ashton Moss site will eventually include 102,000 sq m of warehouse and factory space, along with 9,300 sq m of offices, retail, leisure and a 150-bed hotel.

Tenants already open and trading within the retail and leisure phases include Sainsbury's, a Cineworld multiplex totalling 4,645 sq m, Hollywood Bowl and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Frontage

Ashton Moss is accessed by the recently opened Ashton northern bypass, which creates a new gateway into Ashton Town Centre.

Ease of access has been an important consideration in drawing up the proposals and Ashton Moss will provide a fully-integrated transport system to tie into the new Metrolink.

Ashton Commerce and Office Park enjoys frontage to the A635 Manchester Road, the Ashton Northern Bypass and M60.

Letting agents on the Office Depot deal were King Sturge and Cordingleys.

Proposals for Ashton-under-Lyne's New Market Hall
Proposals for Ashton-under-Lyne’s temporary new market hall are being unveiled today (Friday June 11), as Tameside Council bosses submit the official planning application.

The temporary building is to be sited on Old Cross Street car park, around 50 metres away from the old, Victorian building, ravaged by fire. Council engineers have started preparatory works this week which are likely to continue.

The 2400 square metre modular building – large enough to accommodate all the traders who wish to return - will have three halls, one for food stalls, and two for non-food businesses.

The ready-built structure, from Hull-based company Marchant Walker, should begin to arrive in sections around the end of July.

Council surveyors and architects assessed seven different types of modular building, with support from planners, before finalising the decision.

It will be fitted with lighting, electricity, easily washable indoor walls and PVC-covered timber flooring.

As each hall is put in place, it will be fitted out with basic stalls to enable traders to move in – ready for opening in early September.

The building will also have a full complement of toilets, including facilities for people with disabilities. A system of ramps will also make the market fully accessible on what is a sloping site.

With a pitched roof reaching 4m high, the structure aims to create sufficient light and space for a vibrant temporary market.

“The fire was an absolute tragedy not only for the market traders but also for the council. Many of the businesses were insured, but the traders lost their livelihoods. Many were family concerns going back generations,” said Cllr Kieran Quinn, cabinet member for economic services.

“The council is doing what it can to help them.”

“Ashton has a rightly-deserved international reputation for its markets and shopping. We must not lose that. We must keep shoppers and visitors coming to Ashton and maintain its standing as one of the best town centres in the region.”

“We will now begin a detailed examination of what can be done with the shell of the old building. Everyone must realise that is a long-term project. But our first priority was to get a market hall trading as soon as possible and that’s what we’re doing.”

Thursday 27th May 2004
The lively and vibrant outdoor market in Ashton-under-Lyne will open for business this Saturday and the monthly Farmer's Market will run on Sunday.

Around half of the outdoor stalls on the market ground will be open as usual, while work continues to make safe the historic market hall which was severely damaged in Tuesday's fire.

Shoppers won't miss out on their usual favourites as the regular Saturday traders will be selling their usual extensive range of goods. Markets bosses are delighted that some traders from the indoor market will also be able to take stalls.

It going to be a busy weekend in Ashton as the annual Black Knight Pageant and Family Fun Day takes place at the Old Cross Street Car Park on Sunday.

Cllr Kieran Quinn, Cabinet Deputy for Economic Services said:

"We will be really delighted to welcome shoppers to our markets this weekend. It's been a very difficult few days but everyone has rallied round and we've seen the real spirit of Ashton people.

"The markets play a vital role in the economic engine that is Ashton and we are working hard to establish the alternative market site. In the meantime it will be great to see the outdoor market up and running again. The markets attract thousands of visitors to Ashton and we are sure its reputation as a vital."

Tuesday 25th May 2004.
Ashton-under-Lyne's historic market hall caught fire in the early hours of this morning, Tuesday 25th May 2004.

The fire brigade was called out at 3.02am this morning and crew arrived four minutes later, when the Victorian Grade II listed building was already well alight, with flames issuing through the roof.

Additional fire appliances were called and at 5am around 90 fire officers were fighting the blaze, with 12 pumps and three aerial appliances. Police officers were also in attendance. There have been no injuries.

Wellington Road, from Penny Meadow to its junction with Oldham Road, is closed one way and is likely to remain so throughout today. Some other access roads are closed.

Most shops will be open fully, including the Arcades shopping centre, Ladysmith shopping centre and Wilkinsons.

The shops on Market St and some of the shops on Bow St (eg KwikSave) are likely to remain closed today for health and safey reasons. Council staff are now checking the safety of the remaining market structure, with the aim of saving the shell of the building. It is likely, however, that the walls will need to be shored up for the immediate future.

The usual Tuesday outdoor flea market on the market place is cancelled but markets staff are working hard to get it open again as soon as possible.

They are also working so that the monthly farmers market, due on Sunday, goes ahead.

Fire officers are already beginning an investigation into the cause of the fire.

Portland Basin Museum is opening a brand new exhibition in May- and we would like YOU to get involved!

The exhibition aims to capture the vibe of Tameside’s swinging sixties and recreate the experience of growing up in this area in the 1960s.

If you were a teenager or young adult in the 1960s we want to hear from you- tell us what you wore, what you listened to, where you worked and where you ‘hung out’. You may even have photographs, stories or memories of Tameside in the 1960s.The Museum is also looking to borrow sixties memorabilia- household items, records, clothing and accessories and children’s toys for the six month display.

Alison Watson, Museum Curator, said “The reaction of local people to our previous exhibitions has been fantastic- and we would like to see even more people to get involved with our 1960s project. It is really important for us to start recording what life on Tameside was like even 40 years ago- the Museum Service wants to ensure that these kinds of relatively modern memories are preserved for future generations before they are lost forever.”

Do you think you can help us out? If so please telephone Alison Watson at Portland Basin Museum on 0161 343 2878 or email alison.watson@tameside.gov.uk
