Ashton-under-Lyne offers not one,
BUT TWO GREAT MARKETS!

Shoppers are attracted both to the traditional outdoor market comprising of 140 stalls which operate seven days each week, and to our indoor Market Hall which is open everyday except Sunday.

The bustling stalls of Ashton Market

ASHTON'S HISTORIC OUTDOOR MARKET:
Offers a fine selection of goods at fabulous prices on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

On Tuesdays we hold a huge 'Flea Market' with bargains available on every stall.

On Sundays we offer a giant 'Table Top' sale with unbelievable prices for thousands of items.

On the last Sunday of every month (except December) we hold the largest monthly FARMERS AND PRODUCERS MARKET in the north west, where everything offered for sale has either been grown or made by the people selling it !

Despite the loss of the Victorian Market Hall in a fire in May 2004, you will find all the regular market hall traders in the temporary Ashton Market Hall, which opened in October 2004. Still with a fascinating range of fresh food, including butchers, greengrocers, fishmongers, cooked meat specialists, dairy products, bakery products, sweets, cakes and biscuits galore to make it easy for you to complete your food shopping in one spot – from Monday to Saturday every week. And to wash it all down, you’ll find the Market Hall Off-licence has an enviable range of wines, spirits and beers.

Some traders are the second and third generation on their stalls in Ashton. Barry Gleave, for example, and his family before him have been selling biscuits, cakes, sweets, confectionary and chocolates for longer than most people can remember.

But, the market hall isn’t just about food – oh no! All manner of products are on offer. Musical items from instruments and accessories to sheet music, clothing and footwear of all types, men’s and ladies’ fashion, greetings cards, fancy goods and gifts, sportswear and equipment, CD’s, video tapes and computer games, hardware and household goods, jewellery and watches, furniture, bedding, curtains and soft furnishings, the list goes on and on. We even cater for your pet’s needs. With over 100 stalls you’re bound to find what you’re looking for. A cash machine is available to top up your purse for even more shopping.

And just a couple of minute’s walk will bring you to the market ground, with over 160 stalls, including a further range of fruit & vegetables and fish. The range of goods would take a page or more to list and the atmosphere is electric.

There are also several kiosks offering food to take away. Or, if the weather is good, sit and have your snack while watching the crowds go by.

Every Tuesday, the market is host to the biggest weekday Flea Market in the region. Be prepared for crowds – it’s always very busy. Find something collectable or just grab a range of extra value prices. It’s retail re-cycling. The sale of new consumable goods is also allowed, making for a very diverse and interesting choice.

Pheonix Update:

Plans have now been passed for the refurbishment of the original market hall and work is due to start in Autumn 2006. The plan uses the existing walls of the grade 2 listed building as the basis for its iconic exterior design, but the layout of the interior will evoke memories of the old market hall for visiting shoppers. Subsequent phases will include the future redevelopment of the market ground, with an overarching “roof” to making shopping easier in wet weather.
