WATCH ASHTON'S PANCAKE RACE
VIA THE NET!

Everyone's going flipping mad in Ashton-under-Lyne as they prepare for the annual town centre Pancake Race which will take place on the town's historic marketground at 12.30pm on Pancake Tuesday, which this year falls on 24th February 2004.

And anyone accessing the town's webcam via the Internet from anywhere around the world on that day, will be able to view images captured from this year's race by simply logging on to:

Racing will take place along a specially created course in front of the Town Hall and last year's Champions, MVS Services of Ashton-under-Lyne will be defending their title. Not wishing to be identified in case of reprisals, a team member said: "Last year we showed how flipping superior we were, and we're confident that there is no one out there who can beat us. We expect that we will retain our title"!

An invitation to participate has gone out to shops and stores from across the town centre and it is expected that teams from the Arcades and Ladysmith Shopping Centres will once again lead the challenge and will turn up at the starting line.

However, event organiser, Peter Hawley is doing all he can to keep the peace!

"I'm hoping that the seeding system I've introduced will prevent them meeting in the early heats", he said, "and hopefully it will not be necessary to disqualify either team this year!"

Although the focus is definitely on fun, the event also has a serious side to it as all the £10 team entry fees will be donated to 'The Mayor of Tameside's Charity Appeal'. The Executive Mayor of Tameside, Councillor Margaret Downs will be acting as official 'starter' and will also present the eventual champions with the prestigious ‘Frying Pan' trophy. "Unlike last year when there was much skullduggery, I trust that the teams will stick to the rules this time", joked Peter!

Anyone wishing to enter a team can contact Peter Hawley on 339 3040.
